Get to know a Wedding Client: Betty & David

For some, their wedding day is one of the most important days they’ll experience. The process of planning for a wedding allows us to really get to know a client and understand the vision they have for their special day. We had a great time working with Betty and David, and making their Brooklyn wedding a day to remember! It was an indoor wedding at an artsy venue with a rooftop that allowed for gorgeous photos with the Brooklyn Bridge as the backdrop! We are happy to share their story with you.

How did you two meet?

Betty: The short story is that we met through a mutual friend, Mike. This is the long story: David was at UMass Amherst and I was at NYU. It was winter break of our freshman year of college, and since David had nothing to do he spontaneously hopped on a bus to visit his good friend Mike from high school, who was also attending NYU at the time. Mike told me his friend Dave was in town and I could be the NY tour guide. We instantly hit it off when we met, and the rest is history. We’re now together for a total of ten years. It was a long distance relationship for the first five years, where we became regulars of Fung Wah Bus, Peter Pan Bus, Greyhound, and all the other bus companies that run between New York and Boston. We do miss Fung Wah. Lots of memories.

Tell us about the proposal.

Betty: The Saturday two weeks before Christmas, David took me to our favorite steakhouse in Midtown. I was not in a good mood that day, so I didn’t really enjoy dinner. As we were walking through the park where he first asked me out, he pulled out the engagement ring. I was completely surprised and also impressed that he found a ring that I liked! That park, in Chinatown, was under construction then and I remembered rats jumping over the construction materials as he proposed. He didn’t plan the rats.

Why did you decide to hire a wedding planner and why did you choose Karen Brown New York to help plan your special day?

Betty: David and I had been engaged for two years, but there was no rush to get married. I also had an extremely demanding job and thought that having a planner will help me get organized. Karen helped me with so much, from choosing the venue to the right shoes to wear! I really liked that she kept me on schedule and reminded me about certain deadlines.

Were there any hurdles that had to be overcome during the planning process?

Betty: Several months after we started planning the wedding, I accepted a job in Boston and moved there immediately. The hardest part was planning this long distance, but since we hired Karen it really wasn’t an issue since we were in constant communication and met up on the weekends I was in town.

What was the most important aspect of your wedding?

Betty: The most important aspect of our wedding was probably the food and casual atmosphere. We didn’t want a fancy wedding, just a party where our friends and family could have fun. The food was the most important, because we’ve been to too many weddings where the food was mediocre. We actually chose the venue because of its great food and casual bar environment.

What is most memorable about your wedding day?

Betty: I think it was getting married at the altar. I didn’t think I would get emotional, but I did. And so did David! It was probably one of the most exciting and happiest day of my life.

Do you have a favorite photo from your wedding day that you would like to share?

Betty: Now there’s quite a story when it comes to our wedding photography! Karen seriously saved the day when our original photographer couldn’t show up at our wedding. Karen’s crisis management skills were incredible. We would have had to make do with someone’s iPhone pics if it weren’t for her finding another photographer at the last minute. We couldn’t have been more grateful for having her as our planner that day. She took care of that amazingly well: the original photographer called her the night before explaining he was stuck in another country and couldn’t come, Karen then immediately contacted another photographer, who was thankfully available, and booked her that same night. She handled the crisis before she told me on the morning of the wedding so that I didn’t have one more thing to worry about.
