Karen Brown New York offers a virtual internship program four times a year and this summer we had the pleasure of working with Emily as our Event Research Intern.
Why did you choose to apply for a virtual internship opposed to a traditional office internship?
Fay: I chose to apply for a virtual internship because I wanted to get experience with Karen Brown New York and still be able to attend school not in NYC. I also wanted to gain experience as a virtual internship because it was something different I have not done before.
What are the pros of a virtual internship?
Fay: The pros of a virtual internship is that you can be anywhere and still do it. You can travel and visit friends and family and still be able to work on the internship. Another pro is that having a virtual internship provides flexibility to do other things as well, such as go to school.
What are the cons of a virtual internship?
Fay: The cons of a virtual internship is that you don’t get that face-face time with co-workers so it isn’t as personal of a connection, although Google Hangout was definitely helpful in building that face-face time. Another con of a virtual internship is that you have to make sure you have good time management. You don’t have designated times to do your work, you just have to do the work at some point in time that you choose.
What advice would you give other students who are trying to decide if a virtual internship is right for them?
Fay: Make sure that you are good at managing your time. Understand that although school is important you committed to a virtual internship so you have to make sure you set time apart in your day to do it. Also, make sure that you don’t need the constant help for everything because being a virtual intern means that your immediate response.
What advice would you give future interns on how to succeed as a virtual position?
Fay: Time management is biggest advice. Set time in your day to work strictly on intern things. If you have a deadline coming up, make sure to work on it because who knows if you will have a question that might not be able to get answered for another 24 hours. Communicate with your supervisor when you are having trouble with anything, being a virtual intern your superior won’t ask you every day how things are going.
